Subject: Genealogy #17 Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 18:33:36 +0300 We returned from Galicia Tuesday morning and I have added a section to the web site with some preliminary reports on the trip. Pictures will come later, after I get them scanned, but don't expect too much in that department. You can get at the trip reports at http://www.geocities.com/pikholz/Trip/Trip.htm Thus far there are three reports there - on Rozdol, Skalat and cemeteries in general. We went to the sites of sixteen cemeteries, some of which had several hundred stones, many legible. But not a single one that we could identify as a Pickholz. (Keep in mind that in many cemeteries, they did not write the surname on the stone. And in some cases the surname was on the reverse side and illegible or partially buried.) I did find some that were specifically relevant to other (non-Pikholz) researchers or to the "other side" of some Pikholz families. For anyone who is interested, we have a special mailing list and web site for people interested in Skalat - not necessarily Pikholz. You can get more information at http://www.jewishgen.org/Shtetlinks/Suchostav/Skalat/Skalat.html A few other brief developments. The family we call BARUCH is definitely headed by a son of Yitzhak David Pickholz of Zurawno (a nephew and brother-in-law of Rav Juda Gershon) and I plan merge those families in the next few days. There is a place in Boro Park (Brooklyn) called Copy Corner that reprints very old books, and they have an edition of Rav juda Gershon's three books in a single volume. These books have quite a bit of genealogy information, but it is in Hebrew, in Rashi script and occasionally in rather obscure, Talmudic style. Copy Corner sells the book for thirty dollars plus postage. They can be reached at 718-972-0777. Israel P. -- End --
