OCCAM'S RAZOR, promulgated by William of Occam (1284-1347), an English philosopher and theologian, states that a problem should be stated in its basic and simplest terms. In science, the simplest theory that fits the facts of a problem is the one that should be selected. (That probably holds for genealogy as well, however we must be careful when we choose the easy path by simply discounting apparent discrepancies as errors.  IP)
